Nastergal is a blend of Tempranillo and Alicante Bouschet; sourced from the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. The Tempranillo, a revered variety originating from the Iberian Peninsula provides backbone and matches well with the rustic Alicante. Alicante Bouchet is a teinturier variety meaning it has red flesh as well as red skin unlike most red varieties which only have red skin. This translates to inky blackness from the moment the grapes enter the winery! It is this unique characteristic of the Alicante grape that inspired the wine to be named Nastergal (Black Nightshade) reminiscent of the dark inky berries of this common weed.
The winemaking is kept modest and straightforward to allow the combination of cultivars and site to express itself. The grapes were sorted, destemmed and fermented naturally in open top fermentors with punch downs (pigeage) every now and again. The grapes were gently pressed and drained to barrels for malolactic fermentation. The Alicante Bouschet matured in 4th fill 225 L french oak barrels and the Tempranillo in 3rd fill 500 L barrels for 14 months before blending, a light fining and bottling (unfiltered).
Inky black in the glass with notes of violets, plums and black pepper on the nose. Flavours of red fruits, fennel and savoury spices meet you on the palate, finishing with robust tannins. While still in its youth, this wine is upfront and daring and will mature well with time in the bottle.
